Bold Content Dinosaurs Take Over London! [VIDEO CASE STUDY]

The Cult PR has always got in touch with exciting and out-of-the ordinary projects, so the moment ‘Jurassic Kingdom’ was mentioned, we were all ears!

Dinosaur in LondonThe Brief

We were briefed on a promotional video for a new animatronic experience, where life-sized Dinosaurs would takeover parks across the UK. The promotional video would follow two Dinosaur characters walking around London surprising and charming spectators.

The Process

Filming a video such as the dinosaurs out and about in London you need to be flexible and adaptive to situations that arise. Key to this is preparation of kit, knowing what you will need on the day so that you don’t bring too much that is a hindrance to carry, for example you can be carrying more than a backpack and operate a camera effectively so no cases or extra bags.

The sort of gear you need to think about are cameras, lenses and supports. Cameras will want to be compact enough so that they can be operated by a single camera operator for long periods of time without fatigue as lots of walking and moving around will occur on shoots like this.

Lens wise you will want zoom lenses so that you don’t need to be changing lenses often, ideally like on this project we had more than 1 camera operator so we had A cam on a 24-70 to get the wide and medium shots then B cam on a 70-200 to get those close ups and also for when we didn’t want the film crew to be seen but still get close to the action.Dinosaur Selfie

Supports will usually be either a handheld rig or monopod as a tripod is too bulky and static for this type of shooting. Our A cam was the Sony FS7 which has good handheld ergonomics out of the box matched with a Sony a7sii on a monopod as our B cam.

Lastly make sure the other essential items for your gear are there such as plenty of batteries and memory cards to keep shooting all day, and also think about if you will want ND filters, probably a vari-nd for helping control exposure on the fly.
