While in Italy during the Second World War, Jim was part of a unit that refurbished tanks, and one day, Maria was brought in to be his office hand. Although the two faced a language barrier at first, their love blossomed quickly as Jim was absolutely besotted by Maria’s charm and beauty. After meeting Maria’s family and being given the permission to court her, the pair began to date. On their first date at a theatre in Naples, Jim told Maria that he wanted to marry her, and in three months, a wedding was arranged and they were wed. At the time, neither of their families were entirely supportive of the couple because they wanted their children to marry within their own cultures. When Jim asked Maria if she would be comfortable moving to England with him, Maria replied, “I love you. Wherever you go, I will go,” and so, the pair moved there in 1947. Once in England, Jim did as much as he could to make Maria feel at home, not only because he loved her, but because he appreciated the sacrifice she had made for their love. He would often take her to Italian cafés so that she could speak her native language and he put would try and improve his Italian as well. Although Jim and Maria’s home in England was quite small, Jim did not feel like he needed anything more because he was sharing it with the person he loved most.

Maria passed away about 5 years ago from today. When Jim lost his wife, he did not want to imagine living on in a world without her. Despite the pain of his loss,Jim is grateful for the 64 years they had together and the love they shared. Fortunately, his life is still filled with the love of his 3 daughters, one of which is the spitting image of Maria, and they always keep Maria in their hearts as they move forward.
