Bold Content UCL Law Course Videos [CASE STUDY]

Video has become a popular way to advertise courses offered by Universities. We have been fortunate enough to work with a number of different schools that make up the University of London (UoL). Because of this relationship with UoL we were asked to created a series of educational videos to promote the courses offered by the University College of London Faculty of Law. Below you can learn more about these videos were created.

The Client: University College of London Faculty of Law (UCL)

UCL Faculty of Laws is one of the 11 faculties which make up University College of London. Founded in 1826 UCL Law is both one of the oldest and most highly regarded law schools in the world. Naturally this prestigious institution attracts an extremely high caliber of students who need to be as informed as possible about their course options.

The Brief: Advertising The UCL Courses

UCL Law Course VideosThe brief provided by UCL Legal was to create videos that would both advertise the courses offered by the Law School and to give students enough information for them to make an informed choice about the area of law that they would specialize in. Using video would enable the students to get a flavour of the lecturer’s personality. This gave them a feel for not only the material that would be covered but also the style in which it would be delivered.

Outline Of Project And Interaction With Client

After an initial meeting with the course leader we created a scope of work document detailing their intended goals and deliverables because this was agreed by both parties we were able to make sure that we meet their expectations. We reviewed their existing video material and critiqued it with the course leader to ensure that we were able to improve upon the current material. One thing that we were very keen to do early on was to clarify the intended audience for the video. Once we hear both the agreed on this in writing we were able to make sure that every stage of the video was tailored to their particular requirements.

Once we knew the desired outcome we worked backwards so that each stage of the video production process lead to the impact that we wanted the videos to have. Initially the course director wanted to give lecturers a free reign of want to talk about it in a 5 to 7 minute, however we explained that for online video it was essential to grab the audience attention from the word go. We developed a structure which entailed the lecturer giving a short summary of that would be discussing in the video within the first thirty seconds this means that the audience we are able to make an informed choice if this was the right video for them to be watching. By taking this approach we ensured that audiences would be engaged from the word go.

Solution Presented To UCL Law And The Videos Impact

Course Videos UCL LawIn each of the filming sessions we guided the lecturer to include a succinct summary of what they would be discussing. We made sure to encourage them to show an element of their personality within the video. To facilitate this we scheduled sufficient time for each session to allow us to work with the lecturer to make them feel comfortable in front of the camera and to let their personality feature as part of the video.

As a result of the videos students from around the world were able to get a sense of the school, it’s method of teaching, the type of lecturers that were employed and their teaching methods.

Time Scale Of The Project

We filmed the videos over a four or five month period. The project was initially commissioned several months before filming began giving us plenty of time for pre-production. Each camera crew was booked on daily or half daily basis. Editing was allocated at two days per film day. And we were able to turn around each edit within a week of each filming day.

Response Times

Each camera crew was booked on daily or half daily basis. Editing was allocated at two days per film day. And we were able to turn around each edit within a week of each filming day. Soon after they booked us we needed to respond. There were some last minute cancellations which we could respond to without charging the client some last minute reschedules which required us to assemble a camera crew within twenty four hours.
