Kathleen’s Story
Describing herself as quite the dresser when she was younger,
Kathleen had many suitors and enjoyed dating. There was one point in her youth when she was even seeing two boys at once. However, none of her suitors really interested her until she met a young man named Ray on a coach ride to the seaside in 1952. After meeting, sharing some strawberries, and going for a skate, the two got back on the bus to head home. That was when Ray got up the courage to make his move and kissed Kathleen. She for sure knew then that, this time, she had found something special.
However, their relationship
did start off with a bit of dishonesty. Knowing that Kathleen was 22 and desperately wanting a chance with her, Ray lied and told her that he was 19 when he was actually only 16 years old. Immediately feeling guilty about his lie, he asked to meet with Kathleen and came clean. The two decided that age was just a number and dated until 1954 when Ray proposed. They were married a few years later when Ray was discharged from the National Service.
Like in any marriage, Kathleen and Ray had their ups and downs, but she remembers that they were happy together. Unfortunately, the happiness they shared ended early when Ray passed away at the age of 41 in Kathleen’s arms. She says that despite others saying her wounds would heal with time, she misses her husband more and more each day. Looking back, Kathleen does not know why they worked so well together, they just did. To this day, she remains unable to explain how she knew she was in love, she simply knew.
